This workshop will focus on challenging, hands-on practice aimed at experienced interpreters who want to strengthen their already well-honed skills in sight, simultaneous, and consecutive interpreting. Practice exercises will stress a holistic approach to skill development as we cover current affairs, foreign policy, and legal topics. Attendees will be exposed to a variety of advanced hands-on exercises as we review strategies to acquire new terminology, strengthen performance, and build confidence in any interpreting practice.

Melinda Gonzalez-Hibner, CT is an ATA director and chair of the Interpretation Policy Advisory Committee. An experienced interpreter trainer, she is a federally certified court interpreter and an ATA-certified Spanish>English translator. She has worked for the U.S. Department of State, Department of Defense, Department of Justice, state and federal courts, and private clients. She has a BA from the University of Texas, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and attended the Graduate Program in Interpreting and Translation Studies at the University of Maryland. She is also a member of the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators and the New Mexico Translators and Interpreters Association.

Across the globe, the legal market is in increasing demand of quality translation services. As the legal industry expands, legal translators are expected to demonstrate proficiency in both linguistics and law. In this workshop, attendees will learn how to look at legal language from the eyes of legal professionals and practice hands-on techniques for solving tough linguistic problems. By the end of the workshop attendees will have acquired new resources to better understand their source texts from a legal point of view and render faithful translations that flow naturally in their target language.

Paula Arturo is a lawyer, translator, and law professor with nearly two decades of experience in the language profession. She is a co-founder of Translating Lawyers Academy, an online academy that helps legal translators hone their writing and translation skills. She is a founding member of ATA’s Law Division, administrator of ATA’s Literary Division, co-head of Legal Affairs at IAPTI, and a member of the Public Policies Forum of the Supreme Court of Argentina. Her bragging rights include translating the works of several Nobel Prize laureates and world-renowned jurists.

There are different levels involved in proofreading a text. Grammar is considered the first level. The second level refers to orthotypography, or the visual aspect of the text. The third level involves ensuring the cohesiveness of the text so that it sounds natural and fluid. The fourth level involves checking to make sure the terminology used takes into account the reader and the specific situation involved. Attend this workshop to get hands-on experience in proofreading by working with real translations. Attendees will review the academic rules governing the orthographic, morpho-syntactic, and lexico-semantic conventions.

María Ester Capurro is a sworn English>Spanish translator (Argentine Catholic University). She has over three decades of experience translating for many domestic and international companies and government institutions. She trains professionals on proofreading translations into Spanish at the Association of Sworn Translators of the City of Buenos Aires. She is a professor of Spanish at the University. She is a frequent speaker at domestic and international conferences. Apart from her translation work, she is an editor and proofreader for many publishing houses and collaborates in language research. She has a degree in International Spanish proofreading (Fundación Litterae).

She obtained her postgraduate degree from the École Supérieure d’Interprètes et Traducteurs de La Sorbonne in Paris. She was born in Cuba, and has resided in Spain, Switzerland, France, Norway, and The Netherlands, and is currently based in Houston, Texas. Diego Mansilla, CT is a grader for ATA’s English>Spanish certification exam. A professional translator for over 15 years, he teaches advanced translation at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Holly Mikkelson, CT is professor emerita of translation and interpreting at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. She is a federally certified court interpreter and ATA-certified translator (Spanish to/from English) with four decades of professional experience. She has taught classes and workshops all over the world. She has written many articles and books on various aspects of interpreting, and is the author of the acclaimed Acebo training manuals for court and medical interpreters.

Bruce D. Popp, CT is an ATA-certified French>English translator of patents and scientific and technical documents. He was the recipient of the 2017 S. Edmund Berger Prize for Excellence in Scientific and Technical Translation. He has a PhD in astronomy.

Mylène Vialard, CT provides cultural, linguistic, and branding consulting services to businesses expanding internationally. She has been a linguist for over 20 years, working as a lead translator, reviewer, voice-over specialist, and terminologist. Her work focuses on adapting content to a targeted locale at the intersection of language, culture, marketing, and identity. An ATA-certified English>French translator, she serves as the language chair for ATA’s English>French certification exam. Outside of her work, she is passionate about art, photography, and other artistic expressions with a message.

Then attendees will deal with several text types to help them prepare and develop a better understanding of what the actual exam is like.

James Jones is a freelance translator. He has been an ATA member since 2014. He has an MA in linguistics and is working on a second MA (English composition). Beginning in 2015, he became active with ATA’s Chinese Language Division (CLD), publishing cartoons and short articles in the CLD newsletter. In 2015, he began helping ATA’s Certification Committee develop the first Chinese>English certification exam, and currently serves as the language chair for the exam.

Desktop subtitling tools have been with us for quite a while now, but what about the cloud? In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn how to create, edit, and translate subtitles with different cloud-based tools. We will analyze and compare them to answer the following questions: Is it possible to complete the subtitling process end-to-end entirely online and with professional results? How well do the current online tools cater to the requirements of professional subtitling? Which tool suit you best? What aspects and functionalities are important in choosing the right subtitling software?

Pablo Fernández Moriano has 19 years of experience in audiovisual translation for subtitling and dubbing. He has translated more than 100 films, including Deadpool 2 and Miss Sloane, for which he received the 2018 Asociación de Traducción y Adaptación Audiovisual de España Award for Best Subtitling. He also has extensive experience teaching audiovisual translation and subtitling, and has given numerous presentations at universities, teaching centers, and conferences since 2011. He has a BA in translation and interpreting from the Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio (Spain).

The speaker will discuss some of the common challenges facing interpreters today (e.g., higher expectations of output quality from increasingly discerning audiences, keeping up with speakers who read from a screen in lieu of ad-lib interventions, etc.). Possible strategies and tactics for navigating the demanding terrain of this profession will also be discussed. Audiovisual files will be cited for purposes of illustration and discussion.

For much of today’s content, post-editing machine translation (MT) is simply the way translation is done. As MT improves, this trend will only increase. This workshop will provide a fundamental understanding of what goes into post-editing projects so that attendees can develop skills for keeping pace in our rapidly changing industry. After a brief introduction to MT, we’ll cover a survey of major MT systems, an overview of how these systems are trained and integrated into translation environments, best-practices for post-editing and measuring post-editing efficiency, and compensation strategies. Attendees will also be able to try post-editing in an online translation.

Jay Marciano, director of machine translation (MT) at Lionbridge, has been involved in the development and application of MT for more than 20 years. At Lionbridge, he leads a global team of MT experts and develops and executes the company’s MT strategy. Prior to Lionbridge, he worked for SDL, Transparent Language, as a lecturer in the English Department at the University of Bonn, Germany, and as an editor on the staff of the American Heritage Dictionary. He presents widely on MT and the future of the language services industry, including presentations at ATA conferences.

Translation projects have become increasingly more complex and pose a wide array of challenges that only professional translators and project managers can handle. Join the speaker on a journey detailing complex translation scenarios taken from real projects. Topics will include custom verification rules, translation and quality assurance automation, tips and tricks for using computer-assisted translation tools and regular expressions, and ad-hoc tools that make the lives of translators and project managers easier. This workshop will be packed with dozens of recorded demos that make the learning process fruitful and fun at the same time.

Sameh Ragab is a lead auditor for the International Standards Organization 17100 and a certified translation services provider. He is also a computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool and terminology management expert, a registered translation vendor with the United Nations and World Bank, and a certified localizer. He has over 25 years of experience in the translation industry. His focus is on Arabic and Middle Eastern language services. He has also trained translators and localizers to use CAT and terminology management tools. An international speaker and trainer focusing on the technical side of translation, he has given workshops all over the world.

Every translator aspires to produce translations that are faithful to the original and that sound natural to the intended readers. This workshop will showcase the main problems that make translations less idiomatic, as well as techniques to avoid them. Practice exercises based on the speaker’s professional experience and input from attendees at past workshops will be included. At the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to compile their own checklist of problems and solutions for quality control purposes.

María Barros, CT was born and educated in Spain. She has degrees in classical languages and English philology and a PhD in translation studies. She taught linguistics and English>Spanish translation at the University of León and Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) for several years. In 1997, she started working as a translator at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where she currently holds a permanent position as the senior reviser and terminologist of the Spanish Translation Service. She is an ATA-certified English>Spanish translator.

The speaker will demonstrate cognitive strategies translators can use to target their searches and evaluate their results to improve the quality of their online research. The speaker will also discuss how to use common tools in new ways that are beneficial for translation research. Attendees will have time to practice research tasks and ask questions.

Elizabeth Adams, CT is an ATA-certified Russian>English translator who lived and worked in Moscow for years and now resides in Everett, Washington. While she focuses her practice on legal and commercial translation, she also enjoys translating fiction. She believes that research skills are a translator’s most important tool. She has a BA in Russian studies from the College of William and Mary.

What central bankers say can have a large impact on the real economy. Their spoken and written statements are frequently discussed in the media and in equity, economic, and fixed income research. This workshop will be of use to general and business translators as well as specialists in the financial field. After an extensive introduction to monetary policy and the fixed income (rates) market (this portion requires no Japanese skills), attendees will form teams to translate some select Japanese>English passages.

Christopher Blakeslee has been a freelance Japanese>English translator for 21 years. After working in various fields for several years, he found his niche translating fixed income and equity market research, quantitative strategy, and academic papers in economics. His customer portfolio (including investment banks, stock brokerage firms, and central banks) led him to a sub-specialty in monetary policy. He has a degree in finance from Florida State University and studied economics at the graduate level at the University of Toulouse.
