Louay M. Abdulla has been an Arabic translator since 1995. He became an ATA-certified Arabic>English translator in 2006. He has been working as an Arabic language specialist for the State of New York since 2002. He specializes in legal and business translation and Arabic desktop publishing. He has also helped train women to run their own businesses throughout the Middle East.

Sandra Acevedo is the program coordinator in the Office of Interpreting and Translation for Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland. She is a trained community interpreter with over 17 years of experience as an interpreter and program administrator. She has facilitated numerous professional development workshops designed to build the capacity of interpreters in the school district.

Susan Adams has been with Eagle Strategies and New York Life Securities LLC for more than four years. Her previous 15 years of experience in finance and marketing for a large health care organization provided a solid foundation for her work as a financial adviser. She was recently invited to join the President’s Council at New York Life. She is also a member of the industry’s Million Dollar Roundtable. Her focus is on estate and retirement planning for individuals and small businesses. She has an MBA in finance from the University of Kansas.

Bruce Adelson
Bruce Adelson is a former senior trial attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He is a nationally recognized speaker and expert on federal language access legal mandates for health care. He has given presentations for many organizations, including The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, Cornell University, Harvard University, Kaiser Permanente, Memorial Hermann Health System (Texas), Memorial Health System (Colorado), Frederick Memorial Hospital (Maryland), and the American Society of Health Care Risk Managers.

Katharine Allen
Katharine Allen is a health care and community interpreter with over three decades of experience interpreting, training, and designing curricula. She is co-president of InterpretAmerica. She is the lead developer and licensed trainer for The Indigenous Interpreter 60-hour training course. She has helped train interpreters for medical missions in Mexico. She teaches for the Glendon College Masters in Conference Interpreting program and the Professional Interpreter Online program. She is co-author of The Community Interpreter International: An International Textbook and The Medical Interpreter: A Foundation Textbook for Medical Interpreting. She has an MA in translation and interpreting from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Bassam Amkeie
Bassam Amkeie is the Arabic translator for Prince William County Public Schools with over 25 years of experience in writing, editing, and translating. He has published three English-Arabic dictionaries, has translated several books, and has designed three series for teaching Arabic as a second language. He has finished his Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix. He is pursuing his doctoral program in educational leadership and is expecting to finish his dissertation by the beginning of 2018.

Paula Arturo
Paula Arturo is a lawyer, translator, and former law professor. She is a co-director of Translating Lawyers, a boutique firm specializing in legal translation by lawyers for lawyers. Throughout her 15-year career, in addition to various legal and financial documents, she has also translated several highly technical law books and publications in major international journals for high-profile authors, including several Nobel Prize Laureates and renowned jurists. She is currently a member of ATA’s Ethics Committee and the Leadership Council of ATA’s Literary Division. She is also a member of the Public Policies Forum of the Supreme Court of Argentina.

Frank Austermühl
Frank Austermühl is a professor of translation studies at Aston University, where he serves as the associate dean of marketing and international recruitment for the School of Languages and Social Sciences. Prior to coming to Birmingham, he was the director of the Translation Studies program at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He has a PhD in applied linguistics and translation studies from the University of Heidelberg, and has held academic positions at the universities of Heidelberg and Mainz. He is also a former Fulbright fellow at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Matt Baird
Matt Baird is a German>English freelance translator, editor, and copywriter specializing in marketing and corporate communications. He is a member of ATA’s Public Relations Committee and the editor of interaktiv, the newsletter of ATA’s German Language Division. He has a BA in German and international affairs from the University of Colorado at Boulder. After working inside the Washington, DC, beltway and studying at Georgetown University, he escaped back to Colorado, where he launched a successful freelance translation business. Now based outside Bonn, Germany, he writes, edits, and translates content marketing material for German-based international corporations.

Juan Baquero received a degree in translation from the School of Languages at the National University of Córdoba, Argentina, in 2000. He has been an ATA-certified English>Spanish translator since 2008. He worked as a freelance translator and founded two translation companies in Argentina. He taught business translation from 2004-2015 at the National University of Córdoba, where he has been an associate professor of interpreting since 2008. In 2017, he received his master’s degree in audiovisual translation from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

María Barros was born and educated in Spain. She has degrees in classical languages and English philology and a PhD in translation studies. She taught linguistics and English>Spanish translation at two Spanish universities for several years. She started working as a translator for the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 1997, where she currently holds a permanent position as the senior reviser and terminologist of the Spanish Translation Service.

Angela Benoit is a French to/from English translator specializing in corporate communications, technology products, real estate, travel and tourism, and marketing. Her clientele includes technology startups, financial institutions, hardware manufacturers, and luxury real estate companies, as well as small businesses with an international focus. She began her career as an in-house project manager and translator in 2007 before going freelance in 2013. Carola F. Berger is an ATA-certified English>German patent translator with a PhD in physics and a master’s degree in engineering physics. She became interested in the topic of artificial intelligence after reading about the allegedly impending robot apocalypse. To prepare for the uprising of intelligent machines, or, more likely, for short-circuited self-driving lawn mowers, she has completed several online courses on artificial intelligence and machine learning. She has also constructed an autonomously navigating robot nicknamed Boticelli.

Gabriela Bess has a bachelor’s degree in linguistics and cognitive science and a graduate certificate in localization engineering and project management. She is a project coordinator with the resource management team at Lionbridge. Prior to entering the translation and interpreting industry, she conducted neurolinguistics research. She speaks Spanish, French, some Russian, and is starting to learn Mandarin.

Chris Blakeslee has been a full-time Japanese>English financial translator for 19 years. He has worked as an RF-4 Phantom jet navigator for the U.S. Air Force in Asia and the U.S., a door-to-door salesman in central Tokyo, an in-house translator in Tokyo, an economic development consultant covering East Asia, and a negotiator of trademark licenses and overseas joint ventures for a U.S. conglomerate in Miami, Florida. He has a degree in finance from Florida State University and studied graduate-level economics at the University of Toulouse.

Bianca Blüchel
Bianca Blüchel studied English, Spanish, and translation science at the University of Heidelberg (1979-1984), and has a Diplom-Übersetzerin in translation. She opened her own translation business in 1993, specializing in electrical engineering, measuring technology, machine and plant engineering, quality management, and business administration. She was a part-time lecturer for business English at the University of Mannheim, as well as a part-time lecturer for translating business-related texts into German at Saarland University. Together with her business partner Katrin Pougin, she founded the ACADEMIA Webinars GbR in April 2014.

Alaina Brantner is a project vendor and translation memory manager with CPG, a technical translation and documentation firm that works directly with original equipment manufacturers. Jeanette Brickner
Jeanette Brickner is a German>English translator with nearly a decade of experience in the language services industry. Specializing in automotive and marketing translations, she worked as a research assistant for three years in the Language Resource Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Laura Burian began working as a Chinese>English translator and Chinese>English interpreter in 1995. She has been on the faculty at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey since 2000, where she teaches Chinese>English translation and interpreting courses and co-teaches the multilingual practicum in interpreting. She has also taught many short courses and workshops for interpreters and interpreter trainers throughout the U.S. and China. In addition to his full-time job, he is a part-time freelance translator focusing on offshore drilling, nuclear reactor technology, and military-related subjects.

Guillermo Cabanellas
Guillermo Cabanellas is a lawyer. He has a licenciate in economics (University of Buenos Aires), a master’s degree in comparative law (University of Illinois), and a Doctor of Juridical Science (University of Illinois). He was a visiting and adjunct professor at the law schools of the University of Illinois, Loyola University (Los Angeles), and University of Miami (1977-2015). He was a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute in Munich (1981, 1982, 1987). He has also been a professor at the universities of Buenos Aires, Austral, and San Andres (Argentina). He is the author of more than 40 books, including several bilingual dictionaries, and 100 articles on legal and translation matters that have been published in Argentina, the U.S., U.K., and Germany.

Milena Calderari-Waldron
Milena Calderari-Waldron is a state-certified (Washington State) Spanish court interpreter who is also certified by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services Medical and Social Services. An archaeology graduate from the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, she was a National Council for Scientific and Technological Research doctoral grant fellow and taught Argentine archaeology at the University of Buenos Aires. She is currently the secretary of Interpreters United Local 1671/American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 28 (a freelancers’ labor union). She is also an adjunct faculty member in the Bellevue Community College Translation and Interpretation Certificate program, where she teaches a course in ethics and business practices for interpreters. She is a member of ATA’s Interpreters Division Leadership Council and the ASTM F43 Technical Committee on Language Services and Products.

She has over 25 years of experience in the language services industry, including interpreting, translation, and training. She has held positions in the U.K., U.S., and Switzerland. A graduate of the School of Translation and Interpretation in Geneva, her working languages are Italian, French, Spanish, and English. She co-authored The Community Interpreter: An International Textbook and Workbook and The Medical Interpreter: A Foundation Textbook for Medical Interpreting. Alison Carroll is an executive coach with her own practice in Arlington, Virginia. She ran a translation business working from French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish into English for almost 20 years before starting a coaching business in 2011. About half her clients come from the military and are either in transition to the civilian sector or working as military employees at federal agencies in Washington, DC. Her clients work on both professional and personal challenges, and she helps them devise solutions that support the changes they want to make.

Young-mee Yu Cho has been head of the Korean Language program in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Rutgers University for the past 20 years. She has published extensively on Korean linguistics and Korean-language education, including the Integrated Korean textbook series. She also conducts research on Korean/Japanese honorifics and the development of Korean hip-hop lyrics. She developed a translation course entitled “Korean Translation: Introduction to Practical Translation and Translation Theories,” which has been offered at Rutgers University since 2013. Mason Colby has worked as a French>English financial translator for over 20 years, part of that time as an in-house translator in Paris, but mostly freelancing in the U.S. He also edits texts written by non-native speakers. Michael Collins has been active in technical translation and localization for over 30 years. He is a former president of Global Translation Systems, Inc. He has a BA from the University of Arizona (double major: Russian and German) and a master’s degree in Slavic linguistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also studied at the university level in Germany and Yugoslavia. An ATA-certified German>English and Russian>English translator, he currently works as a freelance translator. Jayme Costa-Pinto is a translator and interpreter based in São Paulo, Brazil. His literary translations include works by American authors O. Henry, Richard Greenberg, and John Updike. He has a degree in translation and interpreting from the Associação Alumni in São Paulo, a BSc in geophysics from the University of São Paulo, and a post-graduate certificate in Brazilian literature from the University of São Paulo. Silvia D’Amico is a freelance translator working mainly from English into Italian. After training at the Italian Translation Unit of the European Parliament in Luxembourg, she spent a few years working on projects for the European Union. Abigail Dahlberg
Abigail Dahlberg is a German>English translator specializing in environmental issues, principally waste management and water treatment. She has a master’s degree in translation and interpreting from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. She spent several years working as a staff translator and editor for the leading German trade journal for the recycling industry. In 2005, she moved to the Kansas City area and launched a freelance translation business catering to the needs of the German, Austrian, and Swiss environmental sector.

James L. Davis is a professor and the director of the technical Japanese program in the Department of Engineering Professional Development at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A licensed professional engineer, he has worked as a chemical engineer in industry and conducted research as a Fulbright graduate fellow at Kyoto University. He has been teaching technical Japanese at the UW-Madison since 1990. An ATA-certified Japanese>English translator, he served as administrator of ATA’s Japanese Language Division and as a grader in the Certification Program. Marsel de Souza is a full-time interpreter and translator based in Brasilia, Brazil. Silvana Debonis has been teaching online courses in English>Spanish commercial and financial translation at New York University since 2000. She has taught translation at the Universidad Católica Argentina and the Association of Sworn Translators of the City of Buenos Aires. She has also provided specialized English training for accountants at the Colegio de Ciencias Económicas de CABA, for accountants and lawyers at the Asociación Argentina de Estudios Fiscales, and for the tax and accounting departments of large companies. In addition, she has taught financial translation in Peru and Mexico. She is the author of a Spanish to/from English financial, accounting, and tax glossary and the co-author of a Spanish>English commercial law dictionary.

Jennifer DeCamp is chair of ATA’s Standards Committee. She is also a member of the ASTM Language Services Committee, where she heads the technical advisory group to the International Organization for Standardization for Lexical Resource Management. She has worked for more than 30 years on these and other standards related to translation and interpreting. She is a principal engineer for translation and terminology management at MITRE Corporation, a federally funded research and development center in McLean, Virginia. She has worked as a translator and interpreter and taught university courses and many seminars on translation, interpreting, and localization.

John Di Rico began translating in 2005, and specializes in French>English financial and marketing translation. He currently works as the sales and marketing manager for Wordfast and runs a small translation business, ApexTra, in France. He is a member of the Société française des traducteurs. Jutta Diel-Dominique, CT
Jutta Diel-Dominique has an MA-equivalent (Diplom) in technical translation from the University of the Saarland at Saarbruecken, Germany. She has been a full-time English>German freelance translator primarily in the areas of medical instrumentation, general medicine, electronics, telecommunications, and industry and technology for over 23 years. Katrina Dodson is a writer, teacher, and translator of Brazilian literature. Her translation of Clarice Lispector’s The Complete Stories was awarded the 2016 ATA Lewis Galantière Award, the PEN Translation Prize, and a Northern California Book Award. She is currently adapting her Lispector translation journal into a book and translating the 1928 Brazilian modernist classic Macunaíma: The Hero without a Character, by Mário de Andrade, for New Directions. She serves as a mentor in the MFA in Translation Program at Mills College. She has a PhD in comparative literature from the University of California, Berkeley.

Victoria Dopazo
Victoria Dopazo is a federally and state-certified court interpreter with 17 years of experience in court interpreting and over 20 years of experience in teaching languages. She has a degree in teaching English as a foreign language from her native Argentina. In addition to teaching in Argentina, she has taught in the U.S., Australia, and Singapore. She is also certified as a court interpreter by the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators. She has owned and operated language schools in the U.S. and Argentina. As director of The Language Institute, she has taught and coordinated courses and managed translation and interpreting projects.

Chris Durban is a freelance French>English translator specializing in business and finance. She has worked exclusively with direct clients for four decades. Based in Paris, she translates for regulatory bodies, regional authorities, and some of the world's top corporations. She is a member of the Société française des traducteurs (SFT) in France and the Institute of Translation and Interpreting in the U.K. She is the co-organizer of SFT's biennial summer school for financial translators and an instructor in the "Translate in" series, which focuses on writing skills for French/English translators. Helen Eby is a certified Spanish translator and interpreter. She started her university studies in Argentina with two years of medicine at the University of Buenos Aires. She became a teacher of English and Spanish in Argentina and worked as a secretary for an import-export company. She has translated and interpreted in almost every country of Latin America. One of her major interests is supporting translators and interpreters entering the field, which is why she co-founded The Savvy Newcomer blog, Cuatro Mosqueteras, and the Oregon Society of Translators and Interpreters. She also established training programs for medical interpreting and translation in Oregon.

Katherine Young is the author of Day of the Border Guards, a 2014 Miller Williams Arkansas Poetry Prize finalist. She is the translator of two poems by Inna Kabysh. Her translations of Russian and Russophone authors have won several awards and been published in the U.S. and abroad. Several of her literary translations have been adapted into short films. A 2017 National Endowment for the Arts translation fellow, she currently serves as the inaugural poet laureate for Arlington, Virginia.

Eric Yu is the chief executive officer of Global Tone Communication Technology Co., Ltd. and the secretary general of the Language Big Data Alliance. He and his team have established the YeeSight big data analytical platform and YeeCloud language big data platform and developed various products, including YeeKit, YeeCaption, and FindYee App.

Molly Yurick
Molly Yurick won ATA’s School Outreach Contest in 2015, and has been a volunteer for ATA’s School Outreach Program since then. She has given numerous School Outreach presentations internationally and, in January 2017, she gave an ATA webinar about the School Outreach Program. She is a Spanish>English translator specializing in the tourism, hospitality, and airline industries. She has worked as a cultural ambassador for the Ministry of Education in Spain and as a medical interpreter in Minnesota. She has a BA in Spanish and global studies and a certificate in medical interpreting from the University of Minnesota.

Flora Zhang
Tian Zhang is a translator in an immigration law firm in Los Angeles, California. She has an MA in translation and localization management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. A former financial translator in Hong Kong, she translates from simplified and traditional Chinese into English and interprets from Mandarin and Cantonese into English. She also does freelance translation from English into simplified Chinese.

Ran Zhao is an ATA-certified English>Chinese translator and a grader for ATA’s English>Chinese certification exam. She also works as the director of the Chinese Language Program at the University of Virginia.
