Maryam Abdi is a court interpreter and the owner of Kosar Translations, a boutique firm offering Somali>English translations and cultural consulting services to legal and government sectors. She is the founder of Translators Academy, which provides information on marketing, sales, and career strategies for freelance translators. She has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, San Diego. She is a recipient of the Wiley M. Manuel Award for Pro Bono Legal Services, from the State Bar of California, for her volunteer work as an interpreter and translator for victims of human rights abuses.

Katharine Allen
Katharine Allen is a veteran health care and community interpreter with over three decades of experience interpreting, training interpreters and trainers, and providing curriculum design and language access services. She is the co-founder and co-president of InterpretAmerica. She is the lead developer for the Indigenous Interpreting training course for indigenous language interpreters and is an instructor for the Glendon School of Translation Masters in Conference Interpreting program. She is co-author of The Community Interpreter International: An International Textbook and a licensed trainer for The Community Interpreter curriculum. Virginia Anderson
Virginia Anderson has served as administrator of ATA’s Translation Company Division since 2012. She is the chief executive officer of Oregon Translation, which she founded in 1996. In addition to her native English, she is fluent in French and Spanish. Her experience includes work as an entrepreneur, translator, localization project manager, cultural consultant, and bilingual copywriter. She has a university degree in French and Spanish and special certificates from studies in France and Costa Rica. She has been designated an official translator by the Consulates of France and Spain. She founded and led the Associated Linguists of Oregon from 2002-2009.

Paula Arturo
Paula Arturo is the assistant administrator of ATA’s Literary Division. A lawyer, translator, and law professor, she is the co-director of Translating Lawyers, a boutique firm specializing in legal translation. She is an independent lawyer-linguist for the United Nations Universal Periodic Review process of several Latin American States and a legal-linguistic consultant for various international organizations. She has translated several highly technical law books and publications in major international journals for high-profile authors, including several Nobel Prize Laureates and renowned jurists.

Matt Baird
Matt Baird is a German>English freelance translator, editor, and copywriter specializing in marketing and corporate communications. He has a BA in German and international affairs from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and over 15 years of experience in the translation business. After working inside the Washington, DC beltway and spending a graduate semester at Georgetown University, he returned to Colorado, where he launched a successful freelance translation business. Now based outside of Bonn, Germany, he writes, edits, and translates content marketing material for German-based international corporations.

Percy Balemans is the assistant administrator of ATA’s Language Technology Division. She graduated from the School of Translation and Interpreting in the Netherlands in 1989. After working with a translation agency as an in-house translator for a few years, she served as a technical writer and copywriter, information designer, web editor, and trainer for an information technology business. She has been a full-time freelance translator since 2007, translating from English and German into Dutch, specializing in advertising (transcreation), fashion, art, and travel and tourism.

Rosanna Balistreri
Rosanna Balistreri is fluent in Spanish, Italian, and English. In 2010 and 2011, she served as president of the California Healthcare Interpreting Association. She has also served as subject matter expert for the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters. Currently, she is a member of the National Council of Interpreters in Health Care’s Standards and Training Committee and co-chairs the Languages of Lesser Diffusion Work Group. She also teaches translation and interpreting at California State University, Fullerton. She is the owner of REACH-reaching diversity, a consulting agency that provides cultural and linguistic services geared exclusively toward health care.

Gregory Ballou is an experienced quality management systems professional who has been involved in numerous industries. He is currently performing quality management systems audits with TÜV SÜD America. As a lead auditor, he is involved in auditing ISO9001, AS9100, EN15038, and EN17100 Quality Management Systems with a wide variety of clients, ranging from single site to multi national organizations. He has also gained extensive insight into the many different implementations of the EN15038 and EN17100 standards.

Marjory Bancroft
Marjory Bancroft directs Cross-Cultural Communications, a national training agency for community and medical interpreting, with more than 150 licensed trainers in 31 states and six other countries. She has an MA in French linguistics from Québec and advanced language certificates from universities in Spain, Germany, and Jordan. She has lived in eight countries and studied seven languages. Her career spans interpreting, translation, and teaching. She has authored numerous publications, including The Community Interpreter: An International Textbook. She serves on international committees and was the world project leader for an international interpreting standard.

Rosamund Bartlett
Rosamund Bartlett is a writer and translator of Russian literature. Previously, she worked as an academic, publishing books such as Wagner and Russia. Her work as a musicologist has informed her approach to translation. Her Anton Chekhov anthology, About Love and Other Stories, appeared in 2004, along with the biography Chekhov: Scenes from a Life. Her new translation of Anna Karenina was undertaken in conjunction with her biography of Leo Tolstoy. She is currently directing the Early Chekhov Translation Project for the Anton Chekhov Foundation, a U.K. charity for which she is trustee.

Nahla Baydoun
Nahla Baydoun is a translator at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. From 1991 to 2008, she was an assistant professor and chair of the Languages and Translation Department at the University of Balamand in Lebanon, as well as an English>Arabic and French>Arabic freelance translator. She has translated the works of authors such as Amin Maalouf, Susan Sontag, Malika Mokeddem, and Yasmina Khadra into Arabic. She has a diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées in translation (European School of Information Theory) and a PhD in translation studies (Sorbonne University in France).

Holly Behl is a master licensed court interpreter (Texas) and an ATA-certified Spanish>English translator. Angela Benoit is a French to/from English translator specializing in corporate and marketing communications, travel and tourism, information technology, and legal texts. She began her career as an internal project manager and translator in 2007 before becoming a freelancer in 2013. Philip Boehm
Philip Boehm has translated over 30 novels and plays by German and Polish writers, including Herta Müller, Franz Kafka, and Hanna Krall. His nonfiction translations include A Woman in Berlin and Words to Outlive Us: Eyewitness Accounts from the Warsaw Ghetto. He has received numerous awards, including two ATA Ungar German Translation Awards as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He also works as a stage director and playwright: original plays include Alma en venta, Mixtitlan, and Return of the Bedbug. He is the founding artistic director of Upstream Theater in St. Louis, Missouri.

Laurence Bogoslaw, CT
Laurence Bogoslaw has a PhD in Slavic languages from the University of Michigan and an MA in Italian from the University of Connecticut. He is also an ATA-certified Russian>English and Spanish>English translator. He has written articles and given presentations on translation and is a published literary translator. He has also taught translation courses at the University of Minnesota and Century College. He was the founding president (2001-2007) of the Upper Midwest Translators and Interpreters Association (an ATA chapter). He has been a Russian>English grader for ATA’s Certification Program since 2006, and now serves as the program’s grader trainer. He is working on a long-term research project on translation and gender.

Jose Luis Bonilla Sánchez
Jose Luis Bonilla Sánchez is the manager for the Machine Translation Language Specialist team at eBay. A speaker of Spanish, French, English, Italian, and Dutch, he has over 25 years of experience in localization. After receiving a double degree in translation and interpreting from the University of Granada, Spain, he worked as a translator and project manager in Madrid, Paris, and Amsterdam before coming to Silicon Valley in 2000. Since then, he has worked in the areas of translation/transcreation, linguistic quality assurance, knowledge engineering, and machine translation for companies such as EFI, Monster, Welocalize, Apple, and now eBay.

Robin Bonthrone
Robin Bonthrone has been a full-time German>English financial and legal translator for over 25 years, specializing in financial accounting and reporting (IFRSs, German GAAP), corporate taxation, and financial sector regulation and supervision. He was joint coordinator of the German version of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) for several years and translates the German Accounting Standards for the Accounting Standards Committee of Germany. He lectures regularly on finance and related topics at translation conferences and workshops in the U.S. and Europe. He is also currently co-chair of the FIT ISO Standards Committee as a representative of FIT Europe, and has played an active role in the debate surrounding ISO 17100.

Shihua Brazill
Shihua Brazill is a freelance Chinese-English translator, interpreter, certified Chinese teacher, English tutor, and ESL instructor. Her work experience and services include translating, teaching, researching, and editing. She has translated and edited materials for Chinese and American universities for building better working relationships and exchange programs, which were well acknowledged. Likewise, she received positive feedback on marketing materials that she translated and edited for non-profit organizations. She is also a researcher focused on improving Chinese to English translation quality. Annett Brown is an ATA-certified German>English translator. Trained in linguistics in Germany, Russia, and the U.S., she started out as a part-time freelance translator in 1999. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rollins College and, while employed with a pharmaceutical company for seven years, an MBA in project management from the University of Texas at Dallas. Armed with her knowledge of the various functions within a pharmaceutical company (e.g., production, packaging, quality control/assurance, regulatory/medical affairs, and marketing) and specialized knowledge on handling controlled substances, she has been a full-time pharmaceutical/medical freelance translator since 2009.

Allison Bryant is a German>English and Japanese>English translator specializing in science, technology, and medicine. She began freelancing full-time after receiving her MA in translation studies in German from Kent State University in 2013. Before that time, she spent many years translating part-time while expanding her other skills, including advanced training in desktop publishing for multiple software and print formats. Milena Calderari-Waldron is a state-certified (Washington State) Spanish court interpreter who is also certified by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services Medical and Social Services. An archaeology graduate from the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, she taught Argentine archaeology at the University of Buenos Aires. She is currently the secretary of Interpreters United Local 1671/American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 28 (a freelancers’ labor union). She is also an adjunct faculty member in the Bellevue Community College Translation and Interpretation Certificate Program, where she teaches a course in ethics and business practices for interpreters. She is a member of ATA’s Interpreters Division Leadership Council and the Interpretation Policy Advisory Committee.

Michael Cárdenas is the president and founder of Local Concept, an international corporation with over 30 years of experience in the language industry. He works closely with international advertising agencies and corporations in the production of multilingual advertising and marketing campaigns. He has served on the board of the San Diego Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication and the American Advertising Association. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences, government agencies, and universities.

Giovanna Carriero-Contreras
Giovanna Carriero-Contreras is the chief executive officer and founder of Cesco Linguistic Services in Denver, Colorado. A graduate of the School of Translation and Interpretation in Geneva, her working languages are Italian, French, Spanish, and English. While she began her career as a translator, she found her calling in interpreting. She is a licensed trainer of trainers for The Community Interpreter and is a co-author of the recently published textbook for the program. She is a member of the International Standards Organization committee that is developing interpreting standards.

Elena Chang is an independent Korean-language services provider based in Los Angeles. She offers translation, copywriting, interpreting, voiceover acting and directing, cultural consulting, and dialect coaching that includes several North Korean regional accents (in demand in the film industry). She has a diverse background as a writer, law major (bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University), newspaper editor, actor (MFA from the California Institute of the Arts), and entertainment reporter. Feng Chen is an in-house interpreter for the United Nations with 33 years of experience in interpreting/translation, particularly in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. Having interpreted at meetings and events, he counts among his clients the ministers and heads of state/government of nearly 200 countries, including four U.S. presidents, 10 British prime ministers, and Chinese leaders such as Deng Xiaoping. As a conference interpreter in Chinese, he has been invited to lecture/teach at many universities/colleges and has been a guest/visiting professor. He has also engaged in translation and revision. Mercedes De la Rosa Sherman has been a professional translator for 30 years. Robyn Dean has been a nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter for over 25 years specializing in health care. She has over 20 publications, all of which focus on the theoretical and pedagogical frameworks used to advance the practice of community interpreters. She is currently an assistant professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she is the lead instructor for the Institute’s postgraduate degree in health care interpreting. Shana Pughe Dean
Shana Pughe Dean is the manager of strategic initiatives and training at the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees in Utica, New York. She oversees tone translation services, online content management, and the development of cultural competency training. From January 2011 to August 2014, she worked as the manager of the Compass Interpreters Division at the Refugee Center. She has a BA in international studies with minors in human rights and Spanish from Utica College, and an MA in international relations from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.

Silvana Debonis has been teaching online courses in English>Spanish commercial and financial translation at New York University since 2000. She has taught translation at the Universidad Católica Argentina and the Association of Sworn Translators of the City of Buenos Aires. She has also provided specialized English training for accountants at the Colegio de Ciencias Económicas de CABA; for accountants/lawyers at the Asociación Argentina de Estudios Fiscales; and for the tax and accounting departments of large companies. Jennifer DeCamp is the chair of ATA’s Standards Committee. She is the incoming chair of the U.S. mirror group for the International Standards Organization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 37, Terminology and Other Language and Content Resources. She has worked on language standards for 28 years, including for ASTM International, ISO, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the Unicode Consortium, and the U.S. Government Interagency Language Roundtable. She is a principal engineer with MITRE Corporation, working with MITRE’s federally funded research and development centers to improve translation and interpreting practices and technology in the U.S. government and worldwide.

Nirupama Deshpande is a language access senior consultant for Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California region. She is responsible for leading translation services and providing operational and regulatory consultations and oversight to various language services projects, including remote video interpreting. She has an advance degree in translation and interpreting and over 15 years of experience in project and program management, including promoting efficient cross-team communication, engagement, and quality workflows and processes in the language services domain.

Ibrahima Diallo
Ibrahima Diallo is a translator at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Previously, he worked as training coordinator for the UN Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. He is the deputy manager of the eLUNa Project team, in charge of developing an Internet-based UN translation platform. His working languages are Arabic, English, and French. He also speaks Spanish and several African languages. He has a master’s degree in modern languages with a minor in applied linguistics from the University of Ouagadougou.

James Dickens is the senior public health advisor for the Office of Minority Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Regional Office, Office of the Secretary, Region VI in Dallas, Texas. He is a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). He was selected to participate as a clinical team member for the Afghanistan Health Initiative in Kabul, Afghanistan. He served as the officer in charge of the USPHS Commissioned Corps Ebola Response Team 2 (a 76-member inter-professional team) stationed at the Monrovia Medical Unit (MMU) in Monrovia, Liberia-West Africa, where he oversaw local response efforts.

Alexander Drechsel
Alexander Drechsel is a staff interpreter at the European Union. A native German, he now lives in Brussels and works from English, French, and Romanian. An avid user of tablets, he has run tablet workshops for interpreters at European and international institutions and on the private market. He has given presentations at the 2014 International Federation of Translators World Congress and professional association events in Europe. He has published in industry and academic publications and writes a blog and podcasts.

Chris Durban is an ATA director. She is a freelance translator (French>English) specializing in business and finance. Based in Paris, she has over 40 years of experience working for a portfolio of direct clients, primarily in the private sector. In July 2015, she completed Seth Godin’s altMBA, an online leadership and management workshop. She has written client education materials, including The Prosperous Translator and contributions to 101 Things a Translator Needs to Know. She is co-organizer of the Société française des traducteurs’ biennial Université d’été de la traduction financière, and an instructor in the “Translate in…” series focusing on writing skills for translators.

Helen Eby is the leader of the Savvy Newcomer blog team, which connects newcomers to ATA or to the translation and interpreting professions with resources to launch into the profession. She grew up in Argentina, where she became an English and Spanish teacher. Megan Greenya Everson began her audiology career in 2005, and currently works at Oticon Inc. as a pediatric audiologist. She has a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a PhD in audiology from Rush University in Chicago. Previously, she worked as a clinical audiologist and research coordinator at a neurotology practice in Newport Beach, California, where she specialized in both adult and pediatric diagnostic hearing testing, cochlear implant assessment/mapping, and middle ear implants.

Ousama Fatima is the administrator of ATA’s Arabic Language Division. He studied at the American Language Center in Damascus, Syria, where he became certified to translate English>Arabic in 1998. He continued his studies and became an English as a second language teacher. He worked in the United Arab Emirates for a local college for 12 years. Carl Haber, an experimental physicist, is a senior scientist in the Physics Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the University of California. While primarily a particle physicist with a focus on instrumentation development for high-energy colliders, he has also been involved in cultural preservation science since 2002. He and his colleagues have applied methods of precision optical metrology and data analysis to the restoration of early sound recordings. Adrienne D. Mishkin is a board-certified psychiatrist with a specialization in psychosomatic medicine. Clarisa Moraña is a Spanish-speaking technical translator and Proz.com trainer. She studied translation at the Universidad Central de Venezuela. She worked as an in-house contributor to the international news agency United Press International, and as a freelance translator for oil service companies of the Schlumberger group, namely Dowell, Schlumberger, Anadrill, and Geco-Prakla in the late 1980s in Caracas. In 1994, she moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she translated for the leading local newspaper Clarin. Atef Shafik is a language analyst who started working with the FBI in January 1998, first at the Dallas Field Office and then moved to FBI Headquarters in August 2012 where he currently works. As an Arabic language analyst, he provides translation and interpreting services to and from Arabic to FBI staff and management.
